Setup

Put your hands on the edge of a sturdy table, bench or kitchen counter, a little wider than your shoulders. Walk your feet back until your body is straight.

Steps

  1. Tighten your stomach and buttocks.
  2. Bend your elbows and lower your chest to the edge.
  3. Keep your elbows at about 45 degrees from your body.
  4. Push away until your arms are straight.

Breathing

Breathe in as you lower. Breathe out as you push.

Where you feel it

In your chest, the back of your upper arms and the front of your shoulders.

Common mistakes

  • Using a surface that can slide or tip.
  • Letting the hips sag or rise.
  • Lowering only part of the way.

When to stop

Stop if you feel sharp pain, pain in a joint, dizziness or numbness.
